http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Options are easier to and from Kansai to Osaka than to and from Kansai to Kyoto. Kyoto is different. We find it easier to use Yasaka Transport and pay the extra Yen than dealing with a train to Kyoto and then taxi or subway after a 14 hour flight. English-speaking personnel at Kansai will explain all the options.
(If you want to visit Kyoto, Osaka, Nara or Kobe, this is the closest international airport). "Kansai International Airport (関西国際空港 Kansai Kokusai Kūkō?) (IATA: KIX, ICAO: RJBB) is an international airport located on an artificial island in the middle of Osaka Bay, 38 km (24 mi) southwest of Ōsaka Station, in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. The airport is off the Honshu shore. The airport serves as an international hub for All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, and Nippon Cargo Airlines, and also serves as a hub for Peach, the first international low-cost carrier in Japan. It is colloquially known as Kankū (関空) in Japanese." The trip between Osaka and Kyoto took a few trains, our favorite was the Osaka Monorail! This elevated rail is clean, reasonably priced, and fun to ride. You get a good view of the expansive city of Osaka. Our ride was about 25 minutes till we hoped of and found a train to take us the last few miles to Kyoto station. The Osaka Monorail is one of the longest monorail systems in the world, sitting in front we got a great view and it felt a little like a roller coaster as we watch the ups and downs or twists and turns. Riding public transportation in Japan is so easy, most stations have automated ticketing that allows you to change the directions to English (our Japanese is very limited).
